What medical conditions qualify for disability in Texas?

If you live in Texas and are unable to work due to a health condition, you may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits. But not every medical issue meets the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) strict definition of disability. Knowing which conditions are recognized and how the SSA evaluates them is key to building a successful claim.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

How the SSA Defines Disability

To qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your condition must:

  • Be medically diagnosed and documented
  • Prevent you from working in your previous job or any other substantial work
  • Last at least 12 months or be expected to result in death

The SSA uses a resource called the Listing of Impairments, sometimes called the “Blue Book,” to determine which conditions automatically qualify—if they meet certain criteria.

Common Conditions That May Qualify for Disability in Texas

Here are examples of conditions that the SSA often recognizes, if they are severe and well-documented:

Musculoskeletal Disorders

  • Severe back injuries or spinal disorders
  • Joint dysfunction or chronic pain disorders (e.g., arthritis)
  • Amputations
  • Fractures that are slow to heal

Cardiovascular Conditions

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Chronic heart arrhythmias
  • Peripheral artery disease

Neurological Disorders

  • Epilepsy (frequent seizures despite treatment)
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke with lasting impairment

Mental Health Conditions

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • PTSD and severe anxiety disorders

Respiratory Disorders

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Severe asthma
  • Pulmonary fibrosis

Immune System Disorders

  • Lupus
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Cancer

  • Breast, lung, colon, liver, or pancreatic cancer
  • Leukemia or lymphoma
  • Any cancer that is advanced, aggressive, or untreatable

Digestive and Liver Conditions

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis)
  • Chronic liver disease or cirrhosis
  • Hepatitis complications

What If Your Condition Isn’t on the SSA List?

Even if your specific condition isn’t listed in the SSA’s Blue Book, you can still qualify for disability if you can prove it limits your ability to work.

To improve your chances:

  • Provide complete medical records from all treating physicians
  • Submit doctors’ statements explaining how your condition affects daily life and work
  • Include test results, treatment history, and proof of ongoing limitations
